Parametric Analysis and Design

Sunlight Hours Analysis

Analytical plugins as part of the Grasshopper Ecosystem are tools to study and analyze the conditions of the surrounding affecting our physical and social comfort. Ladybug and Decoding Spaces are a part of the Grasshopper toolkit that have been used to perform climatic visualization, thermal analysis and quantify spaces respectively.

The analysis has been performed on the six patches in Ahmedabad of 100m x 100m, five from the Calico Mill site itself and one from Dhal ni Pol to compare and contrast between sites both climatically and socially.

Compactness, orientation of streets majorly in North-South direction is appreciable in order to get the least number of sunlight hours on ground surfaces and supporting more activities in the open.

Understanding Connectivity versus Permeability

The exercise was about learning the skill of Space Syntax which deals with analysing the streets for checking the different kinds of centrality i.e. connectivity, closeness and betweenness. The task was to check the outcomes at a given site and compare it with the ground reality in order to know how this comparison can help in defining permeability in terms of the physical nature of the site, and the visual dimension in the site and the urban fabric of the site.
Site- Bopal, Ahmedabad
Area- 1 sq. km

A hierarchy in terms of streets is always supposed to be maintained in order to have the areas function as per their desired degrees of publicness.
The streets define the land use around.

Parametric Design for Eixample, Barcelona

The studio exercise focused on producing varying outputs (design proposal) based on a set of fitness criteria. These fitness criteria are obtained from site analysis and inferences for Eixample, Barcelona. All outputs are evaluated and compared across to come up with a design proposal that succeeds in all the fitness criteria well enough (called Pareto Fronts).

Evaluating Fitness Criteria is both at an individual block level and how that block functions in a neighbourhood i.e. superblock/superille. Here, on the basis of the values of all the Fitness Criteria of individual blocks, certain individuals have been grouped together in order to categorize specific uses for each superblock.
